St Patricks Day colloguially,the Irish St Paddy's Day, is a feast day which annually celebrate irishs Saint Patrick one of the patron saints of Ireland on March 17 the day on which Saint Patrick died. The day is a national holiday in Northern Ireland and a public holiday in Republic of Ireland; Montserrat, and the Canadian provinces of Newfoundland and Labrador. In the rest of Canada, Australia, the United Kingdom, the United States and New Zealand, it is widely celebrated but is not an official holiday.

It became a feast day in the Roman Catholic Church due to the infuences of the Waterford born Franciscan scholar, Luke Wadding in the early part of the 17th Century and is a holiday of obligation in the Roman Catholic Church in Ireland.

Celebrations are usually themed all things green and Irish. Both Christians and non Christians celebrate the secular version of the holiday by wearing green and eating Irish food and or green foods, imbibing Irish drink and attentding parades and parties.

The St Patricks Day Parade in Dublin is a part of a 5 day festival, over 500,000 people attended in 2006. The largest St Patricks Day Parade is held in New York City, it is watched by 2 million spectators being the largest in the Southern Hemisphere.

Many people around the world, Irish or not, use this holiday to drink in larger than normal amounts Irish concocted drinks and beers. As well as wearing something green, many people eats green foods such as green eggs or bagels and enjoy having a reason to celebrate and party.
