Memorial Day is a United States federal holiday that is observed on the last Mon. of May. It was formerly known as Decoration Day. this holiday commemorates the U. States men and women who have died in miltary service to their country. It 1st began to honor Union soldiers who died during the American Civil War. After World War I, it was expanded to include those who died in any war of miltary action. One of the longest standing traditions, is the running of the Indianapolis 500 which has been held in conjunction with Memorial Day since 1911.

In addition to remembrance, Memorial Day is also a time for picnics, parties, family gatherings and sporting events. It is the unofficial beginning of summer and people everywhere want to celebrate this 3 day long weekend with fun festivities.

Memorial Day used to be celebrated on May 30 but was changed in 1998 to the last Monday of May to create a 3 day long weekend celebration.
