Each year on the 3rd Monday of January, schools, federal offices, post offices and banks across America close as we celebrate the birth, the life, and the dreams of Martin Luther King Jr.

It is a time for the nation to remember his fight for the freedon, equality and dignity of all races and people. A time to remember the message of change through non-violence.

Martin Luther King Day was founded as a holiday promoted by labor unions in contract negotiations. After his death in 1968, Representative John Conyers introduced a bill in Congress to make Kings Birthday a national holiday. President Jimmy Carter endorsed the bill but it didn't pass till many years later. Six Million signatures were collected for a petition to Congress to pass the law termed by "the Nation" article as the largest petition in favor of an issue in U.S. history. Opposition to the bill was led by Senator Jesse Helms. He was critical of King's opposition to the Vietnam War.

On January 17, 2000 for the 1st time, MartinLuther King Day was officially observed and celebrated in all 50 States!
