Kwanzaa is derived from Swahili word, Kwanza which means holiday of the first fruits and is part of the phrase Matunda Ya. Dr. Karenga added the extra "a" to distinguish the Afro-American from the African. Kwanzaa was created in 1966 by a young black visionary living on the west coast who was also the founder of and chairman f the Black National Organization. Kwanzaa is celebrated on December 26 to January 1st each year. The tradition comes out of the agricultural people of Africa who celebrated it as a holiday of the first fruits. Each tribe in Africa would come together to sing, dance, eat, drink and celebrate the harvest and give thanks for this festive time of year.
